“Christ, present to us in His Body, which is the Church, is the one Mediator and the unique way of salvation. In explicit terms He Himself affirmed the necessity of faith and baptism and thereby affirmed also the necessity of the Church, for through baptism as through a door men enter the Church.”
-Lumen Gentium, 14
A timely quotation, given recent comments by Pope Francis. I read Lumen gentium (LG) 14 as pertaining only to those persons who assent to the Catholic doctrine concerning baptism, for the council fathers state therein: “Whosoever, therefore, knowing that the Catholic Church was made necessary by Christ, would refuse to enter or to remain in it, could not be saved.”
With knowledge comes responsibility, or, as they say, “ignorance is bliss.” God bless!
That quote has also been posted here: https://thingsvaticaniiactuallysaid.wordpress.com/2013/05/27/made-necessary-by-christ-2/
Both were chosen and created before Pope Francis’ comments, they just happened to have been scheduled to go live soon after. This was simply a coincidence.
